From the very first second the guitar tones on “Coco” drift
wistfully into your ear, the comparison between Beach For Tiger and Mac Demarco
is perhaps too easy to make. That is of
course, after you’re done comparing the synthesizer surge that opens the song
to MGMT’s “Electric Feel”, Tame Impala’s “Let it Happen” and a plethora of
other psychedelic pop songs. However
everything there is to love about all these bands is present on their debut
single. It’s catchy, syrupy guitar is as
infectious, as is the upbeat melody. The
bass is sludgy and absorbing, the vocal harmonies lush and textured.
Even when the song gets slightly carried away with itself
when the brass band appear on the scene, they show the maturity and insight
to keep it in the background.
Beach for Tiger might
not be doing anything revolutionary, but they’re certainly reminding me of all
the right bands, and doing them justice in every sense. I recommend downloading this single to hear
for yourself, especially if you’re a fan of any of the bands I’ve listed.
